We are proud to announce that the recipient of The Music Journalist of the Year-award for work done in 2018 is Anastasia Tsioulcas.

The Music Journalist of the Year-award is an annual award, which was first given out here on Musicians' Corner in 2015 for work done in 2014.

With this award our aim is to highlight quality journalism on the subject of music. We are grateful to the hardworking journalists who endeavour to bring light to this art form and the world around it seen through this art form. Their work is an important contribution, to both artists and the fans of music. Quality journalism on the topic of music isn't always that easy to find, which makes it all the more important to give praise to the music journalists whose work is first-class.

This award is given out after nominations for it have been submitted by our users, and after an artist jury has selected a recipient from the nominations. During the previous years the identity of the jurors was made public. From the year onward the identity of the jurors is kept secret. Artists have to be contributors to this platform to be eligible for this jury. You can read about the award and the former recipients of it, as well as previous juries HERE.

We are elated that Anastasia Tsioulcas receives this award for her music news reporting at NPR. The jury's acknowledgement reads as follows:

In everything from her choice of news items to report on to the delivery of her reports, Tsioulcas reveals her broad spectrum attentiveness and efficiency. She reports on the, for the media often given, as well as the sometimes not so given, with the same level of interest, and her readers can expect her to turn up anywhere where there is a news story to be told. Following this excellent journalist will widen your horizon and keep you updated on matters to do with music that you might otherwise have missed. If every news outlet had contributors of her caliber in their ranks we would have a better world."

For three years now we have given out the Music Journalist of the Year-Award. And we intended to do so this year as well. This award is given to a journalist for work done in the previous year. And during the previous years the nominations for the award have been up to par with the expectations for quality that you need to be able to find in a music journalist receiving this award. However, this year, after putting the artist jury together, we find that the nominations this time around are a bit too weak. We don't give this award out for the sake of it, or whatever. It is intended to highlight quality journalism about music, and should we start giving it out no matter what that would decrease the value of the award, of having received it and receiving it in the future. It does actually go to someone who in our opinion has produced great articles about music, or it doesn't actually go out at all.

We would like to thank you so very much for your nominations. The journalists you nominated gave YOU something as you read them. That certainly is an achievement in of itself.

Dorian Lynskey is the recipient of the third annual Music Journalist of the Year-award. This was announced earlier. And yesterday Dorian Lynskey received his much deserved award in London.

The artist jury that selected this brilliant writer are The Brand New Heavies, Ian Ethan Case and Miriam Kaul. And as usual they selected the recipient from your nominations. We would like to say thank you to our visitors for your excellent suggestions, and for once again giving the jury a difficult task.

The jury's motivation for giving Dorian Lynskey this award for his work in 2016 reads as follows:

We raise our hat to Dorian Lynskey. His work is vivid, deep and wide, and deliciously moreish to read, as he describes the world through music and vice versa. An accomplished writer, who is an asset to the field that he chooses to cover, and music is fortunate that he chose music. Flowing through a deep well of logical references, selecting quotes that zoom in or out on the topic at the right moment, and at times connecting us, the readers, to his subject matter, to the extent that he makes us feel as though they were neighbors, friends, Lynskey brings the horizon as well as humanism to life in his words.

Dorian Lynskey contributes to The Guardian / The Observer, Mojo and GQ Magazine, among other publications. Dorian Lynskey is also the author of 33 Revolutions Per Minute, a book on the history of protest music published in 2011.

The Music Journalist of the Year 2015 is Ruth Saxelby.

Earlier in the year Musicians' Corners' artist-jury elected Saxelby, currently at The Fader, as the recipient based on your nominations.

And yesterday Ruth Saxelby received her much deserved award in New York.

Singer Emma Larsson presented the award.

The artist jury's motivation for awarding Saxelby's journalistic work is:

Ruth Saxelby is our choice. We have done many interviews, and questions can occasionally feel contrived. Saxelby's approach to questioning artists keeps the interest of the reader, while moving the subject matter in a cohesive manner.  As performance artists ourselves, we appreciate her insight and attention to the topic. It was refreshing to read about subjects we don't often read about, such as the inspiration of a film composer. Saxelby is a talented writer, and we hope that she will have many years of unique and insightful journalism.

The artist-jury for the award this year are Kent Beatty, Will Calhoun and Mfa Kera.

This was Musicians' Corner's second annual Music Journalist of the Year-award. In 2015 it first went to Derek Walmsley.

The importance of quality music journalism can't be overestimated, and we very much want to acknowledge it here at Musicians' Corner. We look forward to following Ruth Saxelby's work in the coming years.

It is time for the MUSIC JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR-AWARD!

This annual award, which was presented for the first time in 2015, is now open for nominations!

   Derek Walmsley, Deputy Editor at The Wire, was elected Music Journalist Of The Year 2014, by the artist jury at Musicians’ Corner at the beginning of the year. And on a summer day in London, Walmsley received the award.

   The jury, consisting of artists and Musicians’ Corner-contributors Jean-Paul Bourelly, Svante Karlsson and Chris Simmons, wrote the following about the recipient:

   "Derek Walmsley has an obvious passion for music and the infinite roots of its history. His work is enlightening and well-written. Details are combined with complexity in a way that makes you want to read more. Walmsley’s articles are nuanced and make insightful connections. The reader is informed through his articles and can no longer sit by as a passive consumer. This is elevated writing. It is deep and comprehensive. This is what we need more of today. Derek Walmsley is deserving of the award and should receive it."

   Saxophonist and Musicians’ Corner-contributor Zhenya Strigalev presented Derek Walmsley with the well deserved award in London during the week.
